The first of the Vin Diesel/Riddick movies and to be honest a fine start. While I don’t totally get the Riddick character here (is he a sick twisted evil man or just misunderstood?) there are a couple of really good characters and the premise is awesome. Overall I love this film but the Riddick character is not well realised and that doesn’t get much better in the second. That said, on a smaller budget this film makes the most of the location and concept and the Pilot and Bounty Hunter rock, they are well written with some great dialogue and intense moments. Shame that couldn’t have been spread around more as everyone else is largely cannon fodder.

Highway To Mars

Welcome to Martian Central, please take a ticket, the sheep ray will be with you shortly. Highway to Mars was created by Author Stefan Sawynok as an excuse to ramble his way through Science Fiction that he liked and to shine a light on things such as books that don't get covered all that often in fandom. Mostly covers British and American sci-fi but occasionally steps out to cover pieces from around the world. There is so much Sci-fi out there and so little time. :)

  • Great show – I remember enjoying Pitch Black as a daft monster film when I first watched it – I think I’ll dig it out for another watch soon. (I also remember disliking “Chronicles…” intensely – something about the ease and frequency with which Riddick got out of impossible situations made it lose any sense of jeopardy, I think, although it’s been a while).

Did I hear you say at the end of the show that you’re intending to talk to the Shake and Blake guys again?

I wondered if they might be interested in the “afterlife” of their podcast – I started a Blakes 7 rewatch too late to listen to the podcast in real time, but I’ve enjoyed picking up the podcasts after the fact as I work my way through the DVDs (Season 3, disc 3 at the moment). Although I can’t join in the feedback, I’m enjoying their discussion of the episodes very much, and it’s enhancing the experience of revisiting this series.

    • Hi John,

I was in fact talking to Ian and Dave as your comment came in. I certainly intend to promote the podcast to our audience, and Blakes 7 ahead of the reboot. If you want to record an audio comment and send it in to me I will include it, depending on how things go I will probably put that out in a week and a bits time. I agree totally that this is an awesome way of revisiting the series, it’s the reason I listen to Bigger on the Inside. Glad you enjoyed pitch black, I love it and I think that the budget limitations probably enhanced it a bit. Would have liked to see more character development but I think in stories like this writers are scared to do much because they know people are going to die – why bother. Recording on World War Z today, loved the movie.
